As June 30 rapidly approaches, now is the time for business owners to get organised and ensure everything is in order before the end of the financial year (EOFY). A well-prepared EOFY not only helps you meet compliance requirements, but it also gives you a clearer picture of your financial health, highlights opportunities for growth, and sets you up for a strong start to the new financial year.
Whether you’re doing it yourself or working with a bookkeeper or accountant, this checklist will help you stay on track and reduce EOFY stress.
1. Reconcile Your Accounts
→ Review and reconcile all bank accounts, credit cards, and loan accounts.
→ Match all transactions in your accounting software to ensure accuracy.
→ Check for duplicates, unallocated payments, or unreconciled entries.
2. Review Outstanding Invoices & Data
→ Chase any overdue customer invoices.
→ Write off bad debts if necessary (consult your accountant about the tax treatment).
→ Review your terms of trade and consider tightening payment policies if late payments were a common issue.
3. Finalise Payroll & Superannuation
→ Reconcile your payroll and ensure all employee details are current.
→ Ensure all superannuation contributions for the 2024-25 financial year are paid before June 30 to claim deductions.
→ Finalise Single Touch Payroll (STP) reporting and issue Income Statements to employees via the ATO.
4. Stocktake & Asset Review
→ Conduct a stocktake and write off any obsolete, damaged, or missing inventory.
→ Review your fixed asset register. Consider writing off assets that are no longer in use or that have been disposed of.
→ Consider any new asset purchases before June 30 to take advantage of tax deductions (check with your accountant).
5. Prepare Business Activity Statements (BAS)
→ Ensure your quarterly BAS is up to date and submit your June quarter BAS in line with ATO due dates.
→ Review GST coding and classifications for all transactions.
6. Claim All Eligible Deductions
→ Gather receipts and supporting documents for all business expenses.
→ Don’t forget common deductible expenses like vehicle use, home office costs, professional memberships, software subscriptions, training and education, and marketing.
→ Consider prepaying some expenses for the next financial year to bring forward tax deductions.
7. Review & Update Your Business Plan
→ Reflect on your business performance over the past 12 months.
→ Set new goals and budgets for the 2025-26 financial year.
→ Use EOFY as an opportunity to re-evaluate your pricing structure, supplier contracts, and service offerings.
8. Talk to Your Accountant / Bookkeeper
→ Schedule a meeting to discuss tax planning strategies.
→ Understand any new tax changes or government incentives.
→ Ask for advice on optimising your structure or reducing your tax burden.
By taking the time to prepare now, you’ll make EOFY easier for yourself and your business – and avoid any last-minute surprises. If you’re not sure where to start, reach out to a local accountant or financial adviser for support.
